The parents' campaign for safe driving tuition

Life on a Plate!
Encouraging meeting with Minister

Representatives of Learn and Live met the Road Safety Minister, David Jamieson,
and members of the DTLR last Wednesday 23 January, in London.

Vicki Stone, who founded Learn and Live, found the meeting very encouraging. All the campaign's objectives were discussed and there was a great deal of agreement on many of the issues raised.

Learn and Live has campaigned for the use of P plates by newly qualified drivers for over ten years and is responsible for their popularity with novice drivers countrywide. At last the Government has expressed support for their voluntary use and plans to consult on their compulsory use within the next few weeks. They also favour the green P plate, rather than the green L.

Many of Learn and Lives other proposals are among options likely to be included in the consultation document which follows on from Tomorrows Roads - Safer for Everyone, the departments road safety strategy publication.

Notes for Editors:

Learn and Live was started in 1989 by Vicki Stone following the death of her daughter in a road accident in which a learner driver ignored instructions form his newly qualified supervising driver. In 1990, in response to a high level of press and media interest the necessary legislation was introduced, requiring supervising drivers to be at least 21 and with 3 years experience as a full licence holder.

Sadly other parents lost their youngsters and the campaign expanded in response to the circumstances surrounding these deaths.

Over the last ten years Learn and Live has contributed to achieving the Theory Test, New Drivers Act (2 year probationary period) and the forthcoming Hazard Perception Test.

Learn and Live has been campaigning for compulsory P plates for newly qualified drivers for over 10 years and produced and distributed thousand of its own green P plates nationwide. It also persuaded Halfords to produce a commercial version. Numerous driving instructors have been encouraged to produce and distribute their own versions.

The campaign is run on a purely voluntary basis by committed individuals, who receive no financial rewards. No membership fees are required. Its contribution to the increased attention to the whole area of young driver safety has been acknowledged by successive Road Safety Ministers and among other awards, Vicki Stone was awarded the MBE in the 1994 New Year Honours.

Learn and Lives common senses objectives are supported by other major organisations, members of the public, MPs and Road Safety Professionals and has the support of many parents and young people, particularly via its very successful website.
