Learn and Live - February 1999
BETTER REGULATION OF LARGE GOODS VEHICLES (LGVs) AND
PASSENGER-CARRYING VEHICLES (PCVs) DRIVER TRAINING
RESPONSE TO THE CONSULTATION PAPER
With reference to the above consultation document I would wish to make
the following comments:
- Learn and Live regrets that the decision has been taken not to
conduct a practical test using laden LGVs on the basis of cost.
- We would strongly urge the introduction of a statutory training
scheme as soon as possible. When one considers the level of damage in
property and life caused by LGVs colliding with other roadusers, any
delay is intolerable. Compulsory training is the only sensible course of
action in terms of road safety and in order to drive out the cowboy
haulage firms.
- Learn and Live is in total agreement with the proposal that
accompanying qualified drivers should have a minimum of 3 years
experience as a qualified driver. This should apply equally to PSV
drivers.
