Comments about the web site: Everybody blames young drivers but it's not entirely their fault. They may well be involved in 25% of crashes but were they always at fault? Was it their actions that caused the crash or was it just plain lack of experience that prevented them from being able to cope with the apallingly low standard of driving demonstrated by many so-called "experienced" drivers!! We must educate drivers to improve attitude and method.

Comments about the web site: I applaud the motives behind your organisation and wish you success in what I think must be an up=hill battle. I am not the parent of a young person but as a Driving Instrucor do my best to instill the right attitudes in the people I teach. I don't think we will ever get anywhere with driver attitude intil theory training becomes compulsory. If we could get them into the classroom then with a few videos and some discussion we might make some progress. If the organisation is interested you may put your views on my e-mail list which I have entitled 'Safe Driving List. So far there are about 30 members of which the majority are Approved Driving Instructors. If you wish to join the list just send me an e-mail with the subject 'subscribe'. If you look at injury accidents invovling young people time and again there are other youngsters in the car, is bravado, just showing off or maybe just inattention. Comments about the web site: I believe that a major part of the problem is the road test itself. It consists of you driving on back streets where the speed limit does not exceed 30 MPH and usually many mistakes are ignored. My cousin lives in Poland (in Europe), when she took her driving test she drove for about half an hour. She was forced to drive on busy streets, through city traffic, and for a long distance. I think that this shows more efficiently how good of a driver you are. If our road tests were made a little harder it would help minimze the number of accidents throughout the U.S.

Comments about the web site: Wheelspin. As a motor based, education, training and leisure based project in the West Midlands, we can only applaud the efforts you are making to promote appropriate training for young road users. We will ensure that the projects members and all our working partners are made aware of your site and would welcome the oppotunity to link with it. Young driver and rider education is still not receiving the attention it requires in order to be effective. We continue to encourage schools to include work on attitudes, responsibilities and access to regulated training as part of the curriculum where latitude to do so exists. Keep doing what you're doing. Regards Simon Brittain. Project Director.

Comments about the web site: I am an active member of my local group of the Institute of Advanced Motorists (Norfolk and Norwich). I am helping a couple of fellow members organise for young drivers (17-20 years old, to introduce them to the principles of advanced driving, with the focus on observation, hazard perception, planning and anticipation. significant emphasis will be placd on operating within the limits of teh road and the vehicle, and particlarly observing speed limits. Although the tuition will be given by observers rather than qualified instructors we are sure that we can make soem small contribution. I am very grateful for the data you have included in this site, which I shall use to give the required sense of urgency, both when speaking wit the youngsters and to other people whose help we will need. Amongst the things you suggest parents could do you might like to include for them the possibility of raising their own driving standards through training and practicing for an advanced driving test. The IAM operates nationally, as I am sure you are aware. I have found that this example seems to have at least a limited success.

However, I think to suggest that we increase our driving age to 18 is unhelpful. I really don't see that extra year would make a lot of difference. I think, if anything, it would make seventeen year olds resentful that they have come under such legislation and more likely to be over-eager when they finally reach eighteen thus causing more problems. I would also like to take issue with the idea that the number of 'young' passengers should be restricted. Some qualification of what consititutes young would be useful, upto 20, 25, 28, 30 - what is young. This idea whatever age legislation would enforce is a blatant infringement of civil liberties not to mention obstructive. The whole point of learning to drive is to obtain the freedom to break away from unreliable public transport, if young people previously travelled with their friends on buses, they will do so in cars for convenience's sake. As a young driver myself, about to take a test on Monday 29th, I would be horrified if I was unable to give my friend's lifts etc. if I pass. It will be extremely useful to have a licence, I am sure that my friend's and I will go for daytrips to the coast etc. as we have previously done on unreliable trains. It is disgraceful to suggest that we should not be allowed to do this. For the record, I think we should find a system between ours and the German's. The German system is ridiculously strict - any road traffic offence. Legislation in this country will soon mean people can be ticketed for going 1mph over the speed limit. This, as any driver knows, can happen quite by accident - imagine having to give up your licence for an offence as puny as this. I think that overall your work is wonderful, we would all like to see accidents on the road go down but I think some of this pressure groups policies should be thought out again. I think it possible that members of this group are probably mostly drivers and may not remember how restricting it is not to have a licence. What is more, I would not mind betting that there are some road traffic laws that you have contravened in your time - imagine if your licence were to be revoked just for one of those offences, possibly an offence you didn't even consciously commit. You may have overtaken someone on a motorway - did you hit 75mph, maybe even 80mph - of course you did. Did you deserve to have your licence revoked. No. I would be interested in any replies to my commments to alexander.davies@a-vip.com Keep up the good work, rethink the extremism. Hope I don't cause offence. Alexander Davies Age 17

Comments about the web site: Congratulations on an excellent Website. How refreshing to find a genuine road safety organisation that appears to understand real road safety issues. Most appear to concentrate purely on speed reduction as the be all and end all of road safety. This is utterly futile as the prime cause of nearly all accidents is poor observation and lack of hazard awareness, excess speed is only a factor (often a small one) in less than a third of accidents. Young drivers are far more likely to listen to the valid advice you offer. I fully support your proposals on the driving test. I would like to see regular tests on all drivers. I am an advanced motorist (I notice in your addresses page their web site address is missing) and a member of The Association Of British Drivers, www.abd.org.uk ,who are campaigning for more driver education and training and less concentration on the speed limit issue. Excess and innappropriate speed kills, speed cameras on safe roads and lowering of limits on safe roads are clearly not the answer to all road safety issues as the government seems to think. I have been campaigning for years to get the Government and local authorities to devote more resources to training and education. It's like banging your head against a brick wall! Driving should be on the national curriculum. Keep up the good work! Dave Razzell Horsham

Comments about the web site: There is a general assumption that experienced drivers are safer drivers because they have fewer accidents, and at first the statistics appear to support that view. In fact, many experienced drivers have simply become experts at escaping the consequences of their errors of judgment. The P-plate idea is a good one, but it is important that new drivers are not allowed to use their probationary period simply to get so good at operating the controls of the car that they they can start driving on autopilot like so many others. Many people's driving consists of a series of thoughtless reflexes punctuated by late reactions to entirely foreseeable events - the only way to overcome that problem is by ongoing training (and not only for new drivers!)
My name is: For a couple of years I was an ADI; I gave up for several reasons, one of which was the feeling that I was making a greater contribution to the accident statistics than I was to road safety! I am now a lorry driver.

I own a Vauxhall Astra 1.6 and I have driven other cars ranging from 1.0 to 2.0. I have never at any time thought I am not in control of these cars. I accept that young drivers do have accidents but the people I see speeding the most are drivers in their late 20's early 30's who can afford fast cars such as Porsches BMWS various others. To assume that only young drivers speed is completely wrong and to have all these heavy punishments is unfair.

Comments about the web site: An interesting web site. I was interested in the different standards for driving instruction in different countries. However as there doesn't appear to be any attempt to correlate the standards of driving instruction with accident statistics it is not meaningful, in the sense that it doesn't tell us whether differing standards of driving tuition save lives. I am not sure that a "P" plate is going to be at all helpful in reducing accidents. Your examples of young peoples' accidents seem to indicate that it is showing off and inexperience that is the prime cause of accidents. I can't see how showing a "P" plate would alter that. I would advocate many more hours of driving accompanied by a qualified driver, not necessarily a professonal trainer, and some form of psycological education to impress upon youngsters the dangers and consequences of " driving outside their experience and capabilities.

Comments about the web site: I am in favour of your campaign and believe that if we can do anything to reduce accidents on our roads, then we should. I believe young males are the biggest problem as they view a car as their pride and joy and think speeding is cool (not all). I have mentioned about the P plates to male drivers and they are against due to the cosmetic fact, which is not really important. They wont be laughing when they become or someone they know becomes a fatal statistic. Unless they are made compulsory not one will use them, except for the cautious driver, which unfortunately there is little of. I would use one, but would like to see others using them especially males. I require an answer Thank you Hayley J

My name is: For years, I have tried very hard to drive within the speed limits, however after 40 years of driving experience within the UK and overseas, I have collected 3 penalty points and a £60 fine for driving downhill at 37mph in a 30mph zone, naturally I'm devastated! I have now placed a 'Green P' plate on the rear of my vehicle, the effect this has when I am driving in a 30mph zone is that it effectively stops other drivers pushing me along to go faster, what happens now is they overtake at their own risk it's their licence that is at stake NOT MINE. However, I do feel that the agencies could upgrade and make more use of the number 5 for example 25mph, 35mph, 45mph, 65mph and 75mph. Slower speed limits on open country roads are not the way forward for modern economical engines the traffic must be allowed to flow.
