Learner drivers must be 18
starter classes prior to special classes cost £15-£20 for 45 minutes
Lessons are in specially adapted cars
These lessons cost £30 each.
THE DRIVING TEST LASTS 45 MINUTES &THE TEST ROUTE INCLUDES MOTORWAY
There is a 100% pass rate, since instructors cannot put people into the test until they are ready.
Until 1976 there was no compulsory motorway instruction but after a young girl caused a crash with 5 fatalities, the law was changed in 5 months.
2-year probationary period
Since 1/10/1988 all newly qualified drivers have been subject to a 2-year probationary period.
If probationers commit any road traffic offence, they are sent back to the driving school for "moderation"(attitude) training. This is normally done in peer groups.
The probationary period can start again after a serious offence.
INSTRUCTORS
Minimum age 23
Equivalent of 2 'A' levels or completion of apprenticeship on all groups, including HGVs required
Must attend a special institute for 5 months - 5 days a week - 8 hours a day, studying:
law, psychology, practical driving, teaching techniques.
HGV requires 2 further months
Motor bikes require 1further month
Instructors take 4 exams, written- oral - practical - teaching.
The course cost £3000.00 followed by 18 months learning skills.
They spend 2 further years working in the industry before they can set up their own schools.
They are encouraged to return every year for updating in law and practices (this is not compulsory but the DOT knows whether they have attended or not).
Needless to say, there are fewer instructors.
